Non si sarebbero piegati, non si sarebbero inchinati, non si sarebbero bruciati

Nel 1969 il cantautore country Johnny Cash compone “Il Quarto Uomo nel Fuoco” ("The Fourth Man in the Fire") compreso poi nella raccolta “La terra santa” (The Holy Land). In questa canzone racconta la storia dei tre compagni di Daniele nella fornace, Sadrac, Mesac e Abed-Nego, riportata nel libro del profeta Daniele (3:1-30) che, rifiutando di sottomettersi al decreto del re babilonese Nabucodonosor di inchinarsi e rendere colto ad una statua d’oro, simbolo dello Stato e della potenza babilonese, vengono gettati legati in una fornace accesa. Ne rimangono però illesi. Il re, con grande sua stupefazione, guarda nella fornace e li vede sciolti che camminano insieme ad un Quarto Uomo, “simile ad un ‘figlio degli déi” che li protegge.

In uno spettacolo natalizio per la televisione, Johnny Cash dedica questa canzone a tutti coloro che devono vivere relegati in una cella per motivo di coscienza e li esorta a guardare che con loro cammina Gesù, il Figlio di Dio, che li benedice.
